Ryan Richardson discusses his career with the Fortuna Police Department with kids at Rio Dell Elementary School.

Rio Dell, CA – On January 15, 2025, Rio Dell Elementary School District hosted a Career Day for 5th-8th graders, a dynamic event designed to inspire students and showcase diverse career opportunities in the local community. Supported in part by the California Community Schools Implementation Grant, the event brought together a variety of professionals to engage students in meaningful discussions about their futures.

This year’s lineup of speakers represented a wide array of professions, providing students with valuable insights into career paths that are thriving locally. Among the featured guests were:

  • Ryan Richardson, School Resource Officer from the Fortuna Police Department, who shared his journey from detective to working with youth and families.

  • Scott Hammond, an insurance agent, author, and podcaster, who emphasized the importance of resilience and community connection.

  • Matt Berry, a Fire Engineer with CalFire and former science teacher, who demonstrated the rewarding intersection of education and public service.

  • Cody Nicholson Stratton, a sixth-generation farmer and entrepreneur, inspiring students with stories of innovation in agriculture.

  • Jillian Santos, Relationship Manager at American AgCredit, who highlighted the importance of supporting local farmers and ranchers.

  • Sue Long, owner of Wendt Construction and former mayor, who encouraged students to pursue leadership and community service.

  • Marie Adams, a retired nurse with decades of compassionate healthcare experience, who inspired students with her dedication to service.

The event underscored the importance of career education in rural schools like Rio Dell Elementary, where keeping students connected to their communities after graduation is a top priority.

“Events like these show our students the many paths they can take to build meaningful lives right here in Humboldt County,” said Karla Tice, Community School Coordinator.

Funded through the $1.9 million California Community Schools Implementation Grant, which runs from 2024 to 2029, Career Day is part of the district’s broader commitment to fostering community connections and career readiness. These efforts aim to inspire the next generation to stay rooted in their hometowns, contributing to the local economy and culture.

Rio Dell Elementary School District extends heartfelt thanks to all the speakers and community members who made the event a success. Together, we are building a brighter future for our students and our community.
